Stop Getting Stuck: The “Belly Flop” Visual for a Consistent Golf Swing Sequence

One of the most frustrating feelings in golf is feeling “stuck.”

Whether it happens at the top of the backswing or coming into impact, feeling trapped robs you of the space, time, and freedom you need to make a fluid golf swing.

You want your impact area to feel big and effortless. You want to feel like you have time to glide through the ball rather than rushing to hit it. But for many golfers, the urge to “hit” the ball ruins the golf swing sequence before it even starts.

If you struggle with consistency, early extension, or just feeling crowded at impact, this simple visual—the “Belly Flop” Drill—can change everything.

The Problem: The Beeline to the Ball

Why do we get stuck?

Often, it starts with the intention to hit the ball immediately from the top of the swing. You might try to make a “beeline” straight down to the ball, thinking, “I have to get the club head to the ball right now.”

This causes two major issues:

  1. The Body Races: Your body spins out too fast, leaving the club behind. You get trapped and have to flip your hands to save the shot.

  2. The Body Stalls: You try to keep your head back and body still while throwing your arms. This might create contact, but it lacks power and compression.

We need a middle ground—a repeatable delivery position where the weight transfers forward, the body clears, but the arms still have room to swing freely.

The Solution: The Swimming Pool Visualization

To fix your sequence, we are going to use a unique visual. I want you to use your imagination.

Imagine you are standing in a swimming pool. Someone has turned on a giant faucet, and the water is rising around you. The water level stops right at waist height (around your thighs).

Now, imagine swinging your club with this water around you.

The “Belly Flop” Move

If you were swinging down into this water, you wouldn’t want the clubhead to dive in first (casting/early release). You also wouldn’t want the grip of the club to smash into the water first (steep/handle dragging).

You want the shaft to “belly flop” onto the surface of the water.

From the top of your swing, feel like the entire shaft slaps the water flat, level with your thighs, all at once.

  1. Go to the top of your swing.

  2. Transition down: Feel the shaft lowering to waist height.

  3. The Flop: Visualize the shaft landing flat on that imaginary water surface.

  4. The Turn: Once you “belly flop,” simply turn through to the finish.

Why This Works

This might sound like an unusual visual, but it forces your body and arms to sync up perfectly.

  • It smooths the transition: You can’t jerk the club down if you want it to land flat.

  • It stops early extension: You have to maintain your posture to get the shaft to that waist-high level.

  • It prevents overactive wrists: You aren’t flipping the clubhead or dragging the handle; you are moving the whole unit together.

You aren’t trying to hit the ball from the top. You are simply delivering the club to that “water level” and then letting the rotation take care of the rest.

How to Practice

You don’t need to hit balls immediately to feel this.

  • Take a setup without a ball.

  • Make a practice backswing.

  • Rehearse the downswing slowly: Feel the “belly flop” at waist height.

  • Swing through to the finish.

Do this a few times to quiet your mind and smooth out your rhythm. Once you have the feeling, step up to the ball and trust that sensation of “belly flopping” the shaft and turning through.

It won’t solve every single issue in your game, but it will give you a simple, repeatable feeling that creates better contact and consistency immediately. Give it a try!
