Did you see what I did there? I didn’t use the club to aim; I used the grip. Today, I’m going to show you why that’s so important and how you can implement it in your game for more accurate and consistent golf shots.

In this video, I’m going to share a simple golf tip that can help you hit your shots straighter.

Stop Looking At The Club Face and Discover Accurate Golf Shots!

Did you see what I did there? I didn’t use the club to aim; I used the grip. Today, I’m going to show you why that’s so important and how you can implement it in your game for more accurate and consistent golf shots.

The Common Problems with Club Face Aiming

What happens a lot of the time, especially if you’re struggling with an over-the-top swing or thrusting your body at the ball, is that we start to subconsciously or consciously adapt to it. You might cut across the ball this way, and you’ll try to fight it by aiming further and further right. But all this does is make you think, “I need to come swing from the inside and go into out.” What eventually happens is you end up aligning further right.

Getting Stuck in the Cycle

This is a common problem. You know your target is a bit more to the right, and you’re actually training that over-the-top move. Likewise, the more you allow for it, the more you start aiming further left, enhancing that cut shot or slice. Your intention has to be confident and relatively neutral if you aim to find more consistency.

Visualize Your Swing Like a Rail Track

One of the simplest things to do is to think of your swing as a rail track. Your target line should be straight, and your body and feet should be more or less parallel to it. Don’t worry about being precise to the millimeter; just start seeing shots more like a railroad effect.

Why Different Club Lofts Can Mess with Your Aim

The next reason you’re aiming your clubs wrong is the different lofts on your irons. Let me explain. Let’s imagine this is our target line:

That’s where we want the ball to start, and we do want the club face to point there. But what happens too frequently, especially if you’ve got some offset on some of your irons, or when you’re using different clubs, is that the way the clubs are made makes the top edge, back cavity, and other areas start presenting themselves in your line of sight. This can skew our aim because instead of focusing on the leading edge, we start looking at the top edge.

Understanding the Misalignment

Let’s take a closer look at different clubs. With some, if I look at the top edge instead of the leading edge and try to square it to my target, I’ll be aiming way left. Then, I might overcompensate by opening it up too much. This misalignment often results in trying to fix your aim by twisting and adjusting the club in your hands, which can lead to even more inconsistency.

Aim with the Grip, Not the Club Face

Instead of looking at the club face, start focusing on your grip. The grip will always have some markings on it—whether it’s the brand name, lines, or other markings. These markings are your true guide.

Using the Grip Markings

Where the grip goes, the club face goes. So, try to visualize lining up these markings with your target. This is your neutral position and is much more repeatable because you can easily spot if the markings are twisted.

Your hand position and aiming become more consistent this way compared to constantly adjusting the club head.

The Importance of a Consistent Grip

Before you put this into action, there’s one key aspect to remember: you need to grip the club with authority and consistency. Your grip should be precise, ensuring your hand is flat and aligned with the club face leading edge.

Maintaining Grip Pressure

When you take your grip, do it with the intention to keep it constant. This means keeping the pressure in your fingers and palms steady, ensuring the heaviness of the club remains the same, and minimizing wrist movement. From your practice swings to setting up behind the ball, your grip should stay the same—no fidgeting.

Pre-Shot Routine for Success

Here’s what your pre-shot routine should look like:

  1. Choose your shot.

  2. Take a couple of practice swings.

  3. Form your grip.

  4. Choose your target.

  5. Set up to the ball, making sure your grip is aligned.

  6. Adjust slightly if needed, but move as one unit without shifting your arms and body too much.

  7. Keep your grip pressure constant.

  8. Take your shot.

By following this routine, your whole swing will become more consistent.

“Stop aiming with the club face, aim with the grip and form that you’ll hold on the club as you approach the shots.”

Simplifying the Approach

The slightest pressure changes or movements in your fingers can significantly impact where the club will go and how it moves. Instead of looking in all the wrong places to fix your swing, sometimes the solution can be as simple as how you’re holding the club. How we aim makes us adjust things subconsciously, but aiming with simplicity brings more consistency.

Remember, aim with your grip, not the club face, and resist the urge to fidget or move your grip once it’s set.

So, get out there and put this into action. Happy golfing!

Most golfers make the mistake of aiming with the club face, but this is actually a big mistake.

The club face can move during your swing, so it’s not a reliable way to aim. Instead, you should aim with your grip. Here’s how it works: Find a target that you want to hit.

Place your club face square to the target. Grip the club so that the leading edge of the grip is pointing directly at the target. Make your swing. By aiming with your grip, you’ll ensure that your clubface is square to the target at impact.

This will help you hit your shots straighter and more consistently.

Here are some additional tips to help you hit straighter golf shots:

  • Make sure your stance is square to the target.
  • Keep your head down and your eyes on the ball.
  • Swing smooth and controlled.

With a little practice, you’ll be hitting straighter shots in no time!
