Simple Golf Swing: Harvey Penick’s Magic Move for Power, Rhythm and Consistency
Harvey Penick really knew his stuff when it came to learning a simple golf swing and this particular golf lesson is one of the very best and simple golf swing lessons to give you rhythm and timing for one, but also consistency and more power.
There are two benefits to Harvey Penick’s Magic move…
One for backswing and one for through swing.
Too many golfers struggle with mobility and restriction in their golf swing but allowing the heel to rise is very good for completing the backswing.
It’s also key to sequencing your golf swing when you know how.
Penick’s magic move was basically initiating the downswing and move to the ball by placing the heel back to the ground and moving weight transfer a little more on the left side.
The key however is when you are doing this to allow the elbow to move down to the hip.
This is one smooth sequential move that will be repeated over and over again.
You can practice this simple golf swing drill as much as you can and I encourage you to do it at home or the office to groove this feeling.
The more reliable you make this move, I assure you that your consistency and power will greatly increase but also you rhythm and timing.
This is what will give you a simple golf swing that you can rely on and one that you can use week in week out and most importantly allow you to focus on your target and playing the game rather than thinking about complicated golf swing instruction.

Dera Alex,HARVEY PENICK’s drill is well known ,but it was valid at a time when It was commonly accepted that the left heel should move up a little bit at the end of the backswing .Today’s golfers are more flexible and they complete their backswing without lifting their left heel (So do I though I’m past 82 years of age -Handicap 7).The “trigger”to the backswing is better obtained by the “turn forward ” of the hips ,or the” push off of the legs” ;
As for the right elbow ,this is a controversial subject :BEN HOGAN touched on this in his BOOK :FIVE LESSONS ‘THE FINDAMENTALS OF THE GOLF SWING
Great points Ray! For most golfers with limited mobility, it can really help. And the right elbow down is not so much a specific position, more a sequence type thing. Thanks and keep it up sir!
